Participants learn numerous techniques to hold the attention of children and stretch their imagination. Reading Soup Using the big black pot from the folktale Stone Soup, teachers are introduced to the “meat and potatoes” of sharing a love of reading to children. The Reading Treasure Chest Teachers and parents discover the art of recycling items located around the house to provide opportunities for building reading readiness. Giggles and Wiggles Attention getters, fingerplays and music enhance storytimes with the children. Using rhymes and catchy tunes to songs you already know allows teachers to take these back to the classroom and use right away. Stories that T.E.A.C.H. (Tell, Encourage, Accentuate, Challenge, and Help Me Grow) There are many stories that touch the heart and allow children to walk in another’s shoes, learn compassion, and investigate values. Many of the homes of the children we teach are missing guidance in character education. Participants learn how to share a message without being preachy.
